Season 8 Premier: MURDERBALL

Season 8 Premier MURDERBALL with special guest, director Dana Adam Shapiro
Friday, Sept. 27th, 7:30pm Depot Theatre, Garrison

Better known as Wheelchair Rugby, Murderball is a game created
by paraplegic athletes that is every bit as aggressive as the name
suggests.

Played with bone-breaking intensity, a typical game of
Wheelchair Rugby involves plenty of trash-talking, a few head-
on collisions, and the occasional player being thrown from his
modified wheelchair.

The film offers an up-close look at a recent
Wheelchair Rugby tournament, and the fierce rivalry between the
US and Canadian teams, as well as the personal stories of the
athletes who are passionate, driven, and determined to win - as
one of them says, "I'm not here for a hug, I'm here for a medal."

Every year, thousands of aspiring dancers enter one of the world’s most prestigious ballet competitions, the Youth America Grand Prix, where lifelong dreams are at stake. In the final round, with hundreds competing for only a handful of elite scholarships and contracts, nothing short of perfection is acceptable. Bess Kargman’s award-winning, box office hit documentary FIRST POSITION follows six extraordinary dancers as they prepare for the chance to enter the world of professional ballet, struggling through bloodied feet, near exhaustion and debilitating injuries, all while navigating the drama of adolescence. A showcase of awe-inspiring talent, tenacity and passion, FIRST POSITION paints a thrilling and moving portrait of the most gifted ballet stars of tomorrow.

First Position had its World Premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and was named the audience choice’s 1st runner-up for Best Documentary. It also won the Jury Prize at the San Francisco Doc Fest, the audience award for Best Documentary at the Dallas International Film Festival, the audience award for Best Documentary at the Portland International Film Festival, and the audience award for Best Documentary at DOC NYC. Prior to its completion,  First Position won the WESTDOC PitchFest. Director Bess Kargman was also given the Best New Director award at the Portland International Film Festival in 2012.

Depot Docs next offering is "Marina Abrabovic, the Artist is Present."  See a trailer for the film here.

From the Film's official website: "SEDUCTIVE, FEARLESS, AND OUTRAGEOUS, MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ HAS BEEN REDEFINING WHAT ART IS FOR NEARLY FORTY YEARS.  USING HER OWN BODY AS A VEHICLE, PUSHING HERSELF BEYOND HER PHYSICAL AND MENTAL LIMITS––AND AT TIMES RISKING HER LIFE IN THE PROCESS––SHE CREATES PERFORMANCES THAT CHALLENGE, SHOCK, AND MOVE US. THROUGH HER AND WITH HER, BOUNDARIES ARE CROSSED, CONSCIOUSNESS EXPANDED, AND ART AS WE KNOW IT IS REBORN.  SHE IS, QUITE SIMPLY, ONE OF THE MOST COMPELLING ARTISTS OF OUR TIME."
